Algeria and Canada co-chaired the first meeting of the Sahel Working Group on Counter-Terrorism Capacity Building, which took place in Algiers on November 16 and 17, 2011.
The Working Group was established in the framework of the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF), which was officially launched in New York on September 22 and 23, 2011. Its creation was based on the recognition of the seriousness and complexity of the threat to security from terrorism in the Sahel region.
The Sahel Working Group’s main objective is to help the regional states build their civilian counter terrorism capacity in five priority areas: border security, police cooperation, legal and judicial sector, countering the financing of terrorism, and community engagement.
Almost 200 representatives from Global Counter Terrorism Forum member countries, Sahel regional countries and regional and international organisations participated.
