Usual practices

Documents issued in Canada: As Canada is not a member of the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, documents issued in Canada to be presented in Argentina should be legalized by:

  1. Authentication Services Section, Global Affairs Canada
  2. The Argentine Consulate in Toronto or Montreal (depending on the place of issue of the document).

Documents issued in Argentina: In general, documents issued in Argentina and which are to be used in Canada should be legalized by:

  1. The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  2. The Embassy of Canada in Buenos Aires

The Embassy does not offer advice as to whether or not a certain document should be legalized or translated. This information should be obtained from the institution where the document is to be presented.

Notarial services provided by the Embassy

  1. Authentication of signatures (CAD 50 or equivalent in pesos)
    The Embassy authenticates the signatures of officers of:
    • the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  2. Attestation of signatures / affidavits (CAD 50 or equivalent in pesos)
    A consular officer may witness /attest your signature on a document to be presented in Canada (appointment required). Please submit the instructions of the Canadian institution / law firm requesting that this requirement be fulfilled.
  3. Authentication of photocopies (CAD 20 or equivalent in pesos).

The Embassy may authenticate copies of original documents issued in Argentina which are to be used in Canada. These original documents should bear the legalization of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The original and photocopy should be submitted. The Embassy does not authenticate copies of letters, translations or deeds. For further clarification, please contact the Consular Section.
