Starting from humble roots in Montreal, Just for Laughs was founded in 1983 by Gilbert Rozon as a two-day francophone event. Today, it is the largest international comedy festival in the world, featuring talent from both English and French comedians and making a name for Canada as a country with a well-developed funny bone.

The Consulate General of Canada in Sydney supported this unique Canadian-Australian partnership, and Consul General Mario Ste-Marie welcomed the opportunity to highlight Sydney as the newest international home for Montreal’s favorite summer comedy festival. Just for Laughs has joined forces with presenter Adrian Bohm and the Sydney Opera House to create an event that brings the finest names in international comedy to the Australian stage. Gilbert Rozon, President and Founder of Just for Laughs, was in Sydney for the premiere, together with senior representatives of the Montreal-based company.
The inaugural 4-day festival was declared a smash hit, with audiences flocking to see an international lineup of talent at the world famous venue.
