Canada – Saint Kitts and Nevis Relations

Canada has long enjoyed a close relationship with Saint Cristopher (Kitts) and Nevis. Diplomatic relations were fully achieved when the country gained independence.
In Saint Kitts and Nevis, Canada is represented by the High Commission of Canada in Barbados.
With regard to bilateral relations, Canada has long enjoyed a close relationship with countries of the Caribbean, due to its significant Caribbean diaspora, commercial links, and a long history of Canadian aid and support for the region. Outside of the British Commonwealth, cooperation between Canada and Saint Kitts and Nevis is frequent within the United Nations and the Organization of American States. As part of our engagement in the Americas, in particular the Caribbean, Canada remains committed to strengthening relations with St Kitts and Nevis.
In the context of Cricket World Cup 2007, Canada provided Saint Kitts and Nevis and other Caribbean countries with specialized assistance in the areas of border security and public health.
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provides a limited program of development assistance in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
With regard to Canada’s trade relationship with Saint Kitts and Nevis, bilateral merchandise trade in 2008 reached $13.7 million. Merchandise exports totalled $8.4 million including machinery, electrical and electronic equipment and fish and seafood. Imports to Canada from St. Kits & Nevis totalled $5.2 million in 2008 and included electrical and electronic equipment, railway, precious stones and metals and articles of base metal.
Discussions are underway between Canada and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which Saint Kitts and Nevis is a member of, aimed at achieving a mutually beneficial trade agreement that provides significant economic benefits and takes into account the region's capacity constraints and vulnerabilities.
