Canada – St. Vincent and the Grenadines Relations

Canada has long enjoyed a close relationship with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Diplomatic relations were fully achieved when the country gained independence in October 1979.
In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Canada is represented by the High Commission of Canada in Barbados.
Canada maintains close bilateral relations with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines based on our Commonwealth heritage, trade and investment links, development assistance, tourism, and ties of family and friendship due to the large Caribbean community in Canada. Outside of the British Commonwealth, cooperation between Canada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is frequent within the United Nations and the Organization of American States. As part of our engagement in the Americas, in partlicular the Caribbean, Canada remains committed to strengthening relations with St Vincent and the Grenadines.
In the context of Cricket World Cup 2007, Canada provided Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and other Caribbean countries with specialized assistance in the areas of border security and public health.
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) supports a limited development assistance program in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
With regard to Canada’s trade relationship with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, bilateral merchandise trade in 2008 reached $8.4 million. Merchandise exports totalled $8.3 million including fish and seafood, meat, paper and paperboard and wood. Imports to Canada from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines totalled $136 000 in 2008 and included spices, coffee and tea, fruits and nuts, beverages, and machinery.
Discussions are underway between Canada and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a member of, aimed at achieving a mutually beneficial trade agreement that provides significant economic benefits and takes into account the region's capacity constraints and vulnerabilities.
