CN Rail: critical
to Louisiana’s economy
CN Intermodal, a business unit of Canadian National Railways, is a key player in the North American transportation sector. With mainline track connecting directly to the Port of New Orleans via the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, CN is a major stakeholder in the ongoing success of the Port.
According to Bobby Landry, Director of Marketing for the Port of New Orleans “CN is the single largest user of our intermodal facilities by far and represents a huge piece of business for us. They are the most active railroad in the New Orleans area based on origins and
destinations of cargo. I can’t overstate how critical they are to our success at the Port of New Orleans.”
CN was active in New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina and chose to remain in business post-Katrina. In the aftermath of the storm, CN Intermodal undertook a concerted marketing effort that resulted in sales returning to pre-Katrina levels, preserving jobs and supporting the recovery of southern Louisiana.
CN Intermodal continues to assist the Louisiana economy by offering highly competitive rail transport capacity both domestically and to Canada.
Canadian airlines fly to the “Big Easy”
In Fall 2010, both of Canada’s major airlines, Air Canada and WestJet, reconnected Canada directly with the City of New Orleans. For WestJet, this is a new route which represents the carriers increasing passenger service capacity between Canada and the U.S. For Air Canada, this reinstates the New Orleans service following the suspension of flights due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005; yet another indication of the city’s economic resurgence.
