Christ the Redeemer on Canada Day - Red and white reinforce Canada-Brazil ties

On July 1st, at 7 pm, Christ the Redeemer was illuminated in red and White to celebrate Canada Day and reinforce the strong ties between Canada and Brazil.

"We thank the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro for the incredible opportunity to reinforce the growing relationship between Canada and Brazil.  Canada Day is very important for Canadians around the world, including those who are currently in Brazil for the World Cup.  It is very touching to see such an iconic Brazilian monument celebrating Canada Day right along with us," noted Ambassador of Canada to Brazil, Jamal Khokhar.

On the occasion, the rector of the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, Father Omar Raposo, and the Consul General of Canada to Rio de Janeiro, Sanjeev Chowdhury, participated in an illumination ceremony and the Archdiocese was presented with a Team Canada jersey in thanks.

For Father Omar, to be able to celebrate Canada Day at the Christ the Redeemer Monument, during the World Cup, was a “sign of unity among all people.”
