On March 8, 2012, for the fifth consecutive year, Chicago's Canadian Consulate General joined hundreds of others to celebrate and recognize International Women's Day.
International Women’s Day is a day that is observed annually at the United Nations and is designated by many countries as a national holiday. It began as a remembrance and celebration of the struggle faced by women around the world in the name of equality, justice, peace and development. Though the role of women around the world has continued to evolve in the nine decades since the inception of International Women’s Day, women in the 21st century still face many obstacles in the advancement of their status worldwide.
Since 2007, the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago has supported the city's largest celebration of this important day. Hosting an information booth and a luncheon programme that boasts over 200 attendees, the Consulate General highlights Canada's history with and support for International Women's Day. Reaching local women (and men!) from Chicago's business, academic, cultural and international communities, the Chicago Consulate General raises the profile of Canada with key local contacts while highlighting Canada's own strong commitment to securing rights and freedom for women and girls around the globe.
