In June 2008, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Chile’s former President Michelle Bachelet signed a declaration covering five memoranda of understanding to strengthen cooperation between Chile and Canada, including one in the area of investment promotion.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Investment Promotion seeks to increase two-way investment by promoting a closer working relationship between Canada and Chile. It is intended to help Canadian companies expand into Chile by promoting additional guidance and information on required procedures, regulations and key contacts. The MOU aims to help both parties identify specific investment opportunities in their respective priority sectors. In particular, the mining, infrastructure, energy, utilities, financial services, chemicals, and aquaculture sectors in Chile offer much potential for Canadian investors. The MOU also provides a framework to promote Canada as an investment destination of choice. Chilean investment in Canada continues to grow, and is present in the mining, forestry (wood processing and industrial materials) and pharmaceutical industries.
