Canadian Scholarship programs have allowed more than 200 Chileans to gain academic experience in Canada

Since 2007, over 200 Chilean students have received a scholarship for a semester of exchange in Canada. Thanks to Canadian government programs such as the Emerging Leaders in the Americas (ELAP) and Canada-Chile Leadership these Chilean students of Bachelors, Masters, PhD or technical degrees traveled to Canada to pursue studies for 4 to 6 months in Canadian higher education institutions. Graduate students also conducted research or study for the same period.

Students were selected from Chilean institutions that have exchange agreements with Canadian universities or colleges and meet the academic and English or French language skill requirements. The value of these scholarships ranges from 7,500 to 10,000 Canadian dollars each. During 2011, 72 Chilean students, from both public and private universities throughout Chile, received these scholarships and began their studies in Canada in September 2011 or January 2012.

Since launching the first Exchange Grant Program to Canada in 2007, Chilean students have gained valuable experience during their studies in Canada (see testimonials in Spanish). A new competition of these programs is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2012.

Program Description

The scholarships are facilitated through inter-institutional exchange agreements and provide students with the opportunity to undertake study or research at Canadian universities and colleges. Recipients remain students of their home institutions during this exchange. In addition, ELAP offers a study tour component to selected students to expose them to Canadian governance, business and civil society in key priority areas. Funding is also available for "collaboration missions" by academic leaders from the region to promote partnerships with Canadian post-secondary institutions.
