2008 Canada Day Celebration in Chile
The Ambassador of Canada to Chile, Mr. Norbert Kalisch, and the President of the Canada-Chile Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Paul Schiodtz, celebrated Canada Day on July 1st together with a group of Chilean and Canadian contacts, including Chile’s Minister of Mining, Santiago González.
Representatives from the Chilean government, business community, armed forces and academics attended this event, which was held at the Club Sport Francés, on a sunny winter day.
Canada celebrated several anniversaries in 2008, including: the 141st anniversary of its Confederation on July 1st, 1867; the 400 anniversary of the foundation of Quebec City, the oldest permanent European settlement in Canada; the 250th anniversary of the establishment of a representative government in Nova Scotia, which made Canada one of the first democracies in the world; and the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the colony of British Columbia, which helped ensure that Canada extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
