Ambassador Guy Saint-Jacques expresses concern over the sentencing of Pu Zhiqiang, prominent Chinese Civil Rights Lawyer

Ambassador Guy Saint-Jacques today issued the following statement regarding the conviction of Chinese civil rights lawyer, Mr. Pu Zhiqiang.

Canada is pleased that civil society leader Pu Zhiqiang will soon be released from custody. However, we are concerned by his suspended three year sentence for “inciting ethnic hatred” and “picking quarrels.” We note that the conviction will effectively end Mr. Pu’s career as a lawyer and curtail his work as a champion for freedom of expression.

We believe Mr. Pu is being punished for exercising his right to peaceful and non-violent freedom of expression. He is well known for advocating for a society in which the rule of law applies to and protects all Chinese citizens. This latest conviction is part of a series of incidents involving the persecution of peaceful Chinese citizens, including lawyers, journalists, artists, academics, and religious officials.

We call on Chinese authorities to vacate Mr. Pu’s conviction immediately and unconditionally.
