CANADA DAY: STATEMENT OF THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA-LGBTQ2

This Canada Day, let us come together to celebrate our shared Canadian identity,

and take pride in everything we have achieved in our 149 years since Confederation.

We’ve worked very hard to build the diverse, inclusive, and beautiful country that we all cherish.

A country in which every individual has the freedom to love whomever they choose.

We’ve come a long way, but we still have a lot of work to do.

That is why our government recently tabled a bill in the House of Commons to ensure the full protection of transgender Canadians.

Although we are advancing the rights of the LGBTQ2 community in Canada, we must also defend these rights on the international stage, because too many people worldwide are still deprived of their fundamental rights, because of their orientation or gender identity.

We must fight against homophobia and prejudice, against transphobia and ignorance.

We must demand equality for all, and bridge the gap that remains between our principles and our reality.

I believe Canada and Canadians like you represent the very best vision of the future.

I am so proud to join you today for this important celebration.

On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish you a happy Canada Day.

Happy Canada Day!
