Letter from the Mayor of Montreal on the occasion of the Montreal Canadiens Alumni visit to China

Dear friends,

I am very pleased that you are gather tonight, at the Ambassador’s Residence, on the occasion of Montreal Canadiens Alumni visit to China.

The Montreal Canadiens represent much more than a team celebrated for its sporting achievements and its multiple championships in our national sport – hockey. They are an emblem of our city, as well as of Quebec and Canada. Moreover, they are one of the most famous sports club in the world.

I am pleased that the Canadiens Alumni are on a tour in China, thus offering many young hockey fans a unique opportunity to improve their skills and their love for the sport, through training camps initiated by the CTC Group.

This initiative goes hand in hand with Montreal and Beijing’s intention to further develop their relations. During my visit to Beijing last November, I had the pleasure to meet with Mr. Mayor Wang Anshun. Together we discussed the ties of friendship that unite us and the many cooperation avenues open to us. Beijing and Montreal are both Olympic cities, so we discussed such forms of cooperation in view of the Olympic Winter Games of2022. In this context, we are keen to share Montreal, Quebec and Canada’s winter sports-related expertise and technologies. What a better to start than with hockey!

I congratulate all of you who are associated with the Montreal Canadians Alumni Program, and I wish you great success.

And who knows, the day may not be far away where Canada and China can watch hockey’s "Yao Ming" play for the Montreal Canadiens?

The Honourable Denis Coderre

Mayor of Montréal

President of the Montreal Metropolitan Community
