Canada calls on China to release all human rights lawyers and activists detained since July 9, 2015

July 9, 2016 – Beijing, China – Global Affairs Canada

Guy Saint-Jacques, Ambassador of Canada to the People’s Republic of China, today issued the following statement:

“On the one year anniversary of the July 9, 2015 crackdown on human rights lawyers and activists, Canada calls on China to respect its international human rights obligations and to immediately release all remaining lawyers and activists who are detained.”

“Canada urges China to take important steps to uphold and advance the rule of law in China.”

“The arbitrary arrest, interrogation and holding incommunicado of lawyers and activists for defending the legal rights of Chinese citizens is contrary to the Chinese Constitution and China’s human rights obligations under the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.”
