Study Direct Stream
Application Kit for a Study Permit

Canadian Embassy, Beijing
Consulate General of Canada, Shanghai

Please read this application carefully before submitting your application. The documentation you provide with your application is necessary to establish that your entry to Canada would not be contrary to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Failure to provide complete, truthful, and accurate materials may result in your application being refused.

Your study permit applications will be assessed based on the documents you submit. Please ensure that you submit all relevant documents as outlined in this application kit.

All documents must be submitted at the same time as your application and processing fee. Only documents in English or French will be accepted. All documents in Chinese must be accompanied by an English or French translation.

Application kits are free of charge and can be downloaded from our websites: www.beijing.gc.ca or www.shanghai.gc.ca.

Warning: Providing fraudulent documentation or false information is a grave offence. If you or someone acting on your behalf directly or indirectly misrepresents facts relating to your application for a study permit:

  • your application will be refused;
  • the circumstances of your refusal will be entered into Canada’s global immigration database; and
  • you could become inadmissible to Canada for two (2) years under section 40 (2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

1. Requirements for the Study Direct Stream Study Permit Application

The Study Direct Stream (SDS) provides a streamlined study permit application process for students with English language abilities who will enter directly into their program of study at an eligible Canadian college or university. In place of most financial documents, qualifying applicants must submit a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution. Visit our Study Direct Stream website to find out if you qualify for SDS and to get more information on GICs.

2. Requirements for a Canadian Study Permit

You must satisfy the officer that you meet the requirements of the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Regulations and that you must:

  • satisfy an officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your period of authorized stay;
  • be accepted by an educational institution and hold a valid letter of acceptance;
  • prove that you have enough money to support your stay in Canada;
  • produce any documents requested by the officer to establish your admissibility; and,
  • complete a medical examination

A study permit is not required if the duration of the study program is 6 months or less.

3. Agents and Representatives

A representative is someone who has provided advice, consultation, or guidance to you at any stage of the immigration application process, or in an immigration proceeding. A representative is also someone who has your permission to conduct business on your behalf of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

There are two types of immigration representatives: paid and unpaid. Paid representatives are the only people who can charge a fee or receive any other type of payment to represent or advise you on a Canadian immigration proceeding or application. An authorized representative must be either an immigration consultant who is a member of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC); a lawyer who is a member of a Canadian law society; or a notary who is a member of the Chambre des notaires du Québec. Unpaid third parties may include family members, friends, non-profit groups and religious groups.

Important: it is up to you to make sure all the information in your application is true and correct. It is against the law to give false or misleading information to CIC. If anything on your application is false or misleading, you may not be allowed to enter Canada. You could be deported from Canada after you arrive. Be sure to review all the information on your application form and ensure that all questions are answered truthfully before signing and dating the forms.

No immigration representative has special access to our programs and services. No one can guarantee you a visa. You can get all the forms and guides you need to apply for any type of visa for free on our website.

To protect your privacy, you need to give written consent to CIC before we share any of your personal information with your consultant, lawyer, or other representative, paid or unpaid. Use the Use of a Representative (IMM 5476) form to give your consent. Please note that all persons who assist in the preparation of applications must be identified on this form.

4. Financial Support

You must show that you have enough money available for your stay in Canada. You must be able to pay for your tuition fees, as well as return transportation and living expenses for yourself and accompanying family. According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada guidelines, a single person without dependents will require approximately $10,000 CAD per year, not including tuition fees, to cover living expenses. This requirement is fulfilled by purchasing a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution. Visit our Study Direct Stream website for more information on GIC.

In addition to the GIC, you must provide evidence that you have the funds available to pay the tuition fees for your first year of study.  You can either provide evidence that you have already paid the tuition fees for your first year of studies, OR you can provide a bank certificate showing that you have the funds available to pay the tuition fees for your first year of study.

5. Studying in Québec

If you plan to study in the province of Québec, you must submit a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) along with your application. The school that has accepted you should provide you with an application form and the necessary information.

6. Steps in applying for a Study Permit

Step 1: Undergo the Medical Examination.

To apply under SDS, you must undergo a medical examination before submitting your study permit application by visiting one of the Panel Physicians for China listed on this website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/dmp-md/medical.aspx

When visiting the Panel Physician, you must bring the following documents:

  • 4 passport pictures;
  • your original passport; and
  • a photocopy of your passport biodata page.

After the completion of your medical examination, the Panel Physician will provide you with one copy of your medical examination form. This form must be submitted together with your Study Permit application. Submission of this form does not guarantee approval of your application. Do not make commitments until your study permit application has been approved. All costs for medical examinations are payable by the applicant and are non-refundable.

Important: It is not mandatory to complete a medical examination before submitting study permit application. Upfront medicals are however mandatory for applying through the SDS and will normally result in faster processing. If you choose not to complete a medical examination before submitting of your study permit application, you will not qualify for SDS and you must use the standard Study Permit Aapplication Kkit.

Step 2: Gather the Required Supporting Documents

This SDS application kit contains a Document Checklist. Use the Document Checklist to determine which forms and documents must be submitted.

Step 3: Submit your Application

To submit your application, you may visit Visa Application Centres(VAC) operating in China. You may also submit your application by mail to any Visa Application Centre in Chia. VACs are located in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. Visit the VAC website for the full addresses and opening hours.

A fee will be charged for the use of the Visa Application Centre. Consult the website of the Canada Visa Application Centre in China for more information: www.vfsglobal.ca/canada/china/english// .

Important: It is mandatory to use the Visa Application Centres to submit a study permit application through the Study Direct Stream. It will normally result in faster processing time.

7. When Should I Apply?

To avoid disappointment, you should submit your application at least 60 days before the first day of classes.
