Canada-Nicaragua Relations

In Nicaragua, Canada is represented by the Embassy of Canada (Program Office) in Managua. In addition to managing the Development Cooperation Program with Nicaragua, the Program Office also provides full consular services to Canadians. The Ambassador and other Embassy services such as Trade and General Relations are located and managed from the Embassy of Canada in Costa Rica.
Nicaragua is represented in Canada by an Embassy in Washington, D.C. Nicaragua has a consular office in Whitby, Ontario.
While bilateral relations with Nicaragua have matured and evolved over the years, Canada's foreign policy objectives in Nicaragua have remained focused on promoting good governance, rule of law and social and economic development.
Canada's bilateral program of development assistance in Nicaragua is maintained by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Since 1971, Canada has contributed $270 million in Official Development Assistance to Nicaragua, through official flows from CIDA and other government sources. The 2009-2014 Nicaragua Country Strategy focuses on two CIDA thematic priorities: food security and sustainable economic growth through rural economic development.
Bilateral trade between Canada and Nicaragua reached $371.03 million in 2011, an increase of 45.42% over 2010. Merchandise exports totalled $37.31 million in 2011 and imports from Nicaragua totalled $333.72 million.
