Canada - Liberia Relations

Bilateral relations between Canada and Liberia are cordial. Canada is represented by its Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire. Liberian affairs in Canada are managed through the Embassy of Liberia in Washington.

Trade relations between Canada and Liberia are modest but solid, and expanding. In 2013, bilateral trade between both countries totaled about $45.7 million, of which $11.6 million in exports to Liberia and more than $34.1 million in imports from Liberia. Canada mainly exports machines, vehicles, auto parts and textiles. Liberia has significant mining and oil resources and therefore offers interesting business opportunities for Canadian investors.

In 2013-2014, Canadian development assistance, estimated at $1.08 million for Liberia, targeted health. The main Canadian partner involved in Liberia was the Canadian Red Cross Society and, secondarily, Right to Play International and World Relief Canada. The main multilateral partner was the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

Since March 2014, Liberia has been fighting an epidemic of Ebola. As of November 25, 2014, Canada has disbursed $ 88.5 million in support of the health, security and humanitarian interventions to stop the spread of the Ebola virus in West Africa. Canada also deployed mobile laboratories and experts, in addition to providing doses of an experimental vaccine, and personal protective equipment to the World Health Organization.

Then Governor General Michaëlle Jean participated in the International Colloquium on Women's Empowerment in Peace and Security in Liberia in March 2009, co-hosted by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. President Johnson Sirleaf visited Canada in March 2007 and met with the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. President Johnson Sirleaf also participated in the “We Day” conference in Toronto in September 2013.
