Havana and other cities have several venues that show travelling art exhibitions, all of which can be reached through the Centre for the Development of Visual Arts (Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales). Most Canadians who successfully promote artistic projects in Cuba embark upon it as a long-term process, and find that they have to visit Cuba at least once (and in many cases more often) in order to build the relationships with Cuban partners that make the project a success. You may also find it useful to investigate Canadian sources of financial support. More information is available from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's Arts and Cultural Industries division, the Canada Council for the Arts, or your provincial arts council. Regrettably, the Canadian embassy does not have the resources to help you make these initial contacts or establish the parameters of your project.

4. How do I tell Cubans about my cultural event/project/festival/course in Canada?

A. Your best bet for spreading the word in Cuba about an event you are organizing in Canada is to inform the official agency most closely linked to the type of event you are planning. If they judge the nature and timing of the event to be appropriate, they may pass on information about it to their members, or perhaps even suggest a participant themselves. Be sure to include information about any funding opportunities that can underwrite Cuban participation, as this can otherwise be a barrier to attendance by interested Cuban artists or performers.

Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry - ICAIC (Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográfico)

5. I have invited a Cuban to a cultural event in Canada. How do I get help from the embassy to ensure that he or she gets a visa quickly?

A. All Cubans need visas to travel to Canada. Application forms and other information are available at the Immigration Section of the embassy or in the "Visas and Immigration" section of this website. You should provide the person you are inviting with a letter of invitation giving as many details as possible, including the reason for travel, the anticipated travel date, the dates of the event, the dates of the invitee's participation in the event, and the length of stay. Documents should be in English or French.  Applicants should apply a minimum of 3 weeks in advance of their intended departure date, as certain applications are subject to a mandatory ten working day (two week) waiting period. Please ensure that your Cuban invitee submits his or her documents with ample lead time.

6. How do I make a donation to Cuba?

A. The best approach is to provide a cash donation to a Canadian organization that is active in Cuba such as Oxfam Canada or CARE Canada both who have permanent offices in Cuba.

Do not under any circumstances arrive in Cuba with donations without first making firm arrangements through a formal partner such as the Cuban Embassy in Canada, the Ministry of Commerce and Trade (MINCEX) in Cuba, the Cuba Institute of Friendship or the Cuban Council of Churches.   Tourists to Cuba often bring donations (e.g., medicine, toiletries, electronics, toothbrushes, soap) for Cuban friends, families, schools, churches, etc. Cuban customs may seize anything that they do not consider to be reasonable for tourists’ personal use during their vacation.

If you are interested in making in-kind donations to Cuba you can liaise through the following formal channels:

Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos - ICAP).

Contact: Eva Doris Díaz (Canada Desk Officer)
Telephone: (+537) 838-2414
