Consular Services

The Consular Program helps Canadians abroad who are in need of advice, services or support. At the Canadian Consulate General in Detroit, services extend to the States of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. The Consular section deals with topics such as legal matters, protection and assistance, repatriation, deaths and illnesses, prisoners, and citizenship and passport issues among others.

The Consular Section of the Detroit Consulate General provides the following services:

Assistance to Canadians in distress

Canadian citizens in distress in the Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky can reach the Consular Affairs Section in Detroit during normal business hours (M-F 8:30-12:00 and 1:00-4:00 EST) at 313-446-4747.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada maintains a 24-hour, seven days a week emergency service for Canadian citizens, designed to assist during periods the Consulate may be closed. The service covers such matters as deaths, illness, accidents, evacuations, missing persons, child abductions/custody, kidnapping, arrest and detention and passport issues. Incarceration

Our involvement in cases of Canadians who are incarcerated abroad ranges from assuring the general well-being of the person to prison visits and providing information on the Canada-U.S. prison transfer treaties where necessary. View more information.

Passports

Passport issuance for Canadians residing in the United States is handled by the Passport Office in Gatineau, Quebec.

If you are a Canadian Citizen looking to obtain or renew your Canadian Passport please visit the Passport Canada website for application forms, information on required documents, current processing time and fees. Applications forms are also available by calling the Consulate at 313-446-4747.

In strict emergency situations only, the Consulate is able to issue travel documents for Canadians residing in our territory (Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana).  Call the Consulate Receptionist at 313-567-2340.

As a courtesy to avoid unnecessary delays in processing time, the Consulate General of Canada in Detroit can pre-screen your completed Canadian Passport application. This is an in-person service only and appointments are required. Please call 313-466-4747 to schedule an appointment.

Passport applications forms may be obtained either in person, by mail, or online.

PLEASE NOTE: If travelling to a country which requires you to have a visitor visa, ensure that your passport is processed well ahead of your travel date to allow time to have a visa processed. Check with the Embassy or Consulate of the country(ies) for which you need visas to determine how long it will take for them to process your visa(s).

Applying for Proof of Canadian Citizenship

Applications for registration of Canadian citizens born abroad may be obtained through the Consulate either in person or by mail. Forms and instructions are also available online at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

Upon completion of the application forms, they should be sent, along with all requested supporting documents, photographs and fee, to our office. Copies of your original documents will be made and forwarded to the Citizenship Office in Sydney, Nova Scotia for processing. Your original documents will be returned to you at that time. Processing time for citizenship certificates after they have been received by the Citizenship Registrar in Sydney, Nova Scotia, is about 12 to 15 months.
