Todd Kuiack, Canadian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic met with the winners of the scholarship offered by the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program. Thee energetic and enthusiastic leaders will depart for Canada to spend a semester in Canadian universities. Seven students from the Instituto Tecnológico Santo Domingo (INTEC) will study in Canada during the fall semester.

Maxie Salazar, Merianny González, Juan Gómez, Danna Mendoza will attend  Fraser Valley, in British Columbia; Gabriela Maldonado in Vancouver Island University, also in British Columbia; Francoise Jessica Thomas will attend Ecole de Technologie Supérieure in Quebec and Miguel Díaz in Algoma University in Ontario.

The ambassador congratulated the winners and urged them to take advantage of this experience, not only at the academic level but also at the cultural level and thanked them for choosing Canada to study. The diplomat also highlighted the fact that the number of participants in the program increased and hoped that more students could benefit from this program next year.   

The Canadian government, investing in human capital and the development of a new generation of leaders in the Americas and strengthening the bond between Canadian and regional institutions, offers  through the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program –ELAP- up to 1.600 scholarships in Latin America and the Caribbean to students in higher education programs, to study from one semester up to one year of their field of interest or do research in Canadian institutions of higher education at undergraduate or graduate level. The scholarships are provided through inter-institutional exchange agreements. Beneficiaries must continue to be enrolled as students at their alma mater during this exchange.

In addition, ELAP offers a study trip to some selected students to draw in key priority areas of the Canadian government, business and civil society. Funding will also be available for "Missions of collaboration" with academic leaders in the region to promote cooperation with postsecondary institutions in Canada.
