The Canadian Embassy in Egypt in collaboration with the Children’s Cancer Hospital in Cairo, recently organized a Terry Fox Run at the Giza pyramids. Approximately 7000 people participated in the run that raised more than 100,000 Egyptian Pounds (CDN $ 20,000) to support cancer research in Egypt.
Ambassador de Kerckhove, whose son, Etienne, passed away from cancer earlier this year, opened the run and presided over the raffle and entertainment that followed the run itself.
Egyptian singing star Simone performed for the participants in front of the Sphinx.

Terry Fox’s story of courage, perseverance, and compassion has inspired millions of people worldwide to support the fight against cancer. Terry crossed the provinces of Canada to raise funding and awareness towards finding a cure for all cancers. A cancer victim himself, Terry died at the age 22, after running for 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles).
Thanks to Embassy efforts, the run was supported by many local and foreign companies and individuals.
