Canada-Europe Cooperation in Space

The European Space Agency (ESA) consists of 19 Member States and Canada, which is a Cooperating State and the only non-European country with an Agreement for close cooperation.  Since 1979, Canada has been participating directly in ESA programs such as the ones for satellite telecommunications, Earth observation, space exploration, and generic technology.

In the last decade, ESA has thus awarded more than $200 million in contracts to Canadian companies to produce leading-edge technologies and to carry out studies on new space systems.  This Canada-ESA strategic relationship has facilitated the involvement of Canadian companies in the European space system market and has enabled them to develop durable technological partnerships with European firms.  During the same decade, these partnerships have thus generated additional trade revenues of over $220 millions in Canada.
