Average Processing Times

Processing times for applications submitted in Algiers are indicated in the instructions for each type of application: Temporary Resident (visitor) Visa, Study Permit, Temporary Work Permit and Travel Document for permanent residents returning to Canada.

Temporary Resident Visa Application (Visitor Visa)

  • generally within 2 working days if the application is submitted in person and presents no particular complexity. If further elements are required, such as additional documents or if authorization must be requested from Canada, the processing can take several days, even several weeks
  • if it is sent by mail, 4 weeks minimum from receipt of the complete application by the Embassy
  • IMPORTANT: a longer processing time (up to 20 working days) may be required for citizens of the following countries :
    Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Burma, Burundi, Cambodia, Central Africa, China (PRC), Chile, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), Czech Republic, Cuba, East Timor , El Salvador, Egypt, Equator, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mexico, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambic, Nicaragua, Nigeria, North Korea, Ouganda, Pakistan, Palestinian Nationals (passport or Travel Document holder), Paraguay, Perou, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Slovakia, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Taiwan, Tchad, Tchetchenia, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen, Zimbabwe.

Study Permit Application

  • two (2) weeks minimum from receipt of the complete application by the Embassy if you are visa-exempt to travel to Canada
  • four (4) weeks minimum from receipt of the complete application by the Embassy if you require a visa in addition to the Study Permit
  • add two (2) weeks minimum if a medical examination is required, which will depend on the country or countries where you have lived and the length of your stay in Canada (Please note that this includes applicants having resided in Algeria and Portugal. Consult the list of designated countries and territories.)
  • longer processing times may be required for citizens of certain countries (see visitor visa above).

Work Permit Application

  • two (2) weeks minimum from receipt of the complete application by the Embassy if you are visa-exempt to travel to Canada
  • four (4) weeks minimum from receipt of the complete application by the Embassy if you require a visa in addition to the Work Permit
  • add two (2) weeks minimum if a medical examination is required, which will depend on the country or countires where you have lived, the length of your stay in Canada and/or whether you will be working in a health-care service or in contact with children. For more information consult this page.)

Travel document application

  • generally within 2 working days if the application is submitted in person and presents no particular complexity. If further elements are required, such as additional documents or if authorization must be requested from Canada, the processing can take several days, even several weeks
  • if it is sent by mail, 3 weeks minimum from receipt of the complete application by the Embassy.

Permanent Residence Application

We are currently experiencing delays in the first steps of processing for permanent residence applications.  Please be assured that the total processing time remains unchanged.

  • within 4 months, a letter is sent acknowledging receipt of the application and giving the personal file number
  • processing priority is based on the category (Family, Refugee, Skilled Worker, Business etc.) and the date on which the file is received
  • the current average processing times in Paris are:

    • Family Class: 6 to 12 months
    • Economic Class:

      • Provincial nominees, Skilled Workers and Business applicants selected by the Quebec immigration authorities, Skilled Workers with confirmed job offers: 9 to 12 months
      • Federal Skilled Workers and Business applicants:
        • For applications received before February 27, 2008: 48 to 60 months
        • For applications received after Februrary 27, 2008: 8 to 14 months
        • Business class applications - Federal : 48 to 60 months
    • processing times can vary considerably depending on the following factors

      • how quickly required documents and information are provided
      • our internal security verification procedures
      • whether a selection interview is required
      • whether additional medical examinations are required
