Canada hosted the G8 Summit in Kananaskis Valley, Alberta on June 26 and 27, 2002. In addition to exceptional measures to ensure no significant adverse environmental effect from the Summit, the Government of Canada announced an Environmental Legacy. The Legacy goal is to enhance the natural biodiversity of Kananaskis Country and to promote study, education and stewardship of this region of outstanding natural richness and splendour. The legacy is comprised of two main components: a project to improve habitat connectivity and wildlife corridors, and to reduce wildlife mortality in the Bow River valley near Canmore, Alberta; and a Chair of wildlife ecology research at the University of Calgary. Parks Canada Agency is responsible to manage the habitat infrastructure component, and Environment Canada is responsible to deliver the ecology chair component. The Government of Canada announced the Environmental Legacy on June 9, 2002 in the form of a $5 million seed fund grant, with the expectation that partners will be secured to augment this amount sufficiently to accomplish the goals.
