Information for passport applicants in Germany

Passport applications from Canadians in Germany are usually processed in Berlin.
Depending on your situation, you will need to submit a general passport application or a simplified renewal application.

Processing Times and Travel Plans

As a result of the new requirement for dual nationals to obtain a Canadian passport to travel to Canada, the Consular Section has experienced an increase in the volume of passport applications. Please take note of the standard processing times of 20 working days for complete applications.

If you have travel plans and a proof of travel for within the next 4 weeks, please send an e-mail to brlin-cs@international.gc.ca with the subject line “Passport application – travel date”. Please include your full name, date of birth, the date the application was submitted, your proof of travel/e-ticket and we will do our best to accommodate.

We are unable to confirm receipt of applications. If you are not submitting your application in person, please send it by traceable mail and refer to the Deutsche Post or courier website to confirm that the application has been received at the Embassy of Canada in Berlin. You will be contacted if your application is incomplete or if we require additional information. If your application is complete, you are unlikely to hear from us during the process. If you have submitted a credit card authorization form for payment, you will receive an e-mail confirmation when the payment is taken. However, this does not necessarily mean that your application has been finalized.

Depending on the urgency of travel and the documents provided, clients may be eligible for a temporary passport. You will have to come to the Embassy or the Consulate in Munich or Düsseldorf in person to provide proof of urgent travel.

In general, we recommend to apply for a new passport at least six weeks before any planned travel.

Renewal or general application?

The simplified application (renewal) makes things easier:

- shorter and simpler form
- no guarantor or proof of citizenship required

Check here to see if you are eligible.

Passport applications can be submitted in person or by mail:

Embassy of Canada
Consular Section
Leipziger Platz 17
10117 Berlin

When applying for a passport or a citizenship certificate at the Embassy of Canada in Berlin, Canadians have the following options to collect their documents:

  • Coming to the Embassy in person during our opening times.
  • Organizing and paying for a courier to come during our opening times. In this case it is important to inform the Consular Section beforehand, otherwise the documents will not be given to a third party.
  • Receiving the documents through the Deutsche Post registered mail service at no extra cost. Please note that the Embassy is not responsible in cases of loss.

Important information for dual nationals

In fall 2016, the electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) became mandatory for visa exempt travellers to Canada.

You cannot apply for an eTA if you are a Canadian citizen or a dual Canadian citizen.

Every Canadian who travels to Canada by air will need to have a valid Canadian passport.

Please take this into account when planning your next trip to Canada and apply for a Canadian passport at least 20 business days before the planned travel date.
