Canada-Togo Relations

Bilateral relations between Canada and Togo are limited. Most interactions are through multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. In December 2011, the Togolese Prime Minister, His Excellency Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, met with the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable John Baird, in Ottawa.

Canada and Togo established diplomatic relations in 1960. The Canadian High Commission to Ghana in Accra has been ensuring representation in Togo since 1962. The Togolese Embassy in Ottawa has ensured representation of the country in Canada since 1978. Canada also has an Honorary Consulate in Lomé, Togo.

Trade with Togo is limited. In 2011, Canada exported goods to Togo for a total value of $15.5 million (grain, vehicles and machinery), and imported goods from Togo for a total value of $12.4 million (mainly cocoa and vegetables).

Canada does not have a bilateral aid program for Togo. However, a Togo benefits from certain regional aid programs provided by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for a total amount of $5.96 million for 2010-2011. The Canadian Embassy in Accra also manages a modest Canada Fund for Local Initiatives established at $75,000 for the year 2010-2011, which directly benefits the Togolese people.
