One pervasive governance problem in Ghana is public passivity in the face of endemic corruption. People do not want to report corruption for so many reasons. The Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), seeks to inform and empower citizens, especially victims and witnesses of corruption and then translate their concerns into structural changes for better local and national governance. ALAC has, therefore, been created to provide the avenue for people and corporate bodies who either become victims or witnesses of corrupt practices to pursue their cases with the appropriate authority.
The objectives of the CFLI project are to support two critical areas of the ALAC project. These are:
The provision of educational, information and communication materials such as posters, brochures, flyers and documentaries on the ALAC and
To intensify awareness raising through outreach programmes.
The ALAC collaborates with the commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to organize ten (10) outreach programmes on the theme “Reporting corruption – our contribution to building a just and democratic Ghana” in four out of the ten regions of Ghana to empower the citizens to report cases of corruption that come to their attention. These Regions are Western, Ashanti, Northern and Upper East Regions. The major activities under the project are to:
At the end of the project, ALAC wants to see increased number of corruption cases reported to their office, increased awareness of the negative effects of corruption on society and related issues, increased awareness of the mechanisms/institutions available to victims/witnesses of corruption, increased number of people empowered to assert their rights and increased collaboration between citizens and district CHRAJ offices.
The Ghana Integrity Initiative is the local chapter of Transparency International.
