In many Ghanaian communities and many African countries, insufficient attention is given to critical issues affecting women. Generally women are underrepresented in politics, policy and decision making processes in the home and at the district and national levels. Statistics available indicates that at the national level Ghana’s legislative arm of governance has only about 8.2% women’s participation, while women’s participation at the regional and district levels are much worse.
The Ghana Reflect Practitioners’ Network, also known as, Pamoja Ghana is a Network of REFLECT Practitioners. REFLECT stands for Regenerated Freirean Literacy through Empowering Community Techniques. Pamoja Ghana has the ultimate goal of empowering vulnerable groups to be able to access their rights for social development. Pamoja Ghana’s vision is to see an empowered society in which all persons can take control of their destiny, be able to influence policy makers to listen to their voices and also be able to challenge all dominant power structures in the local as well national level.
Through CFLI support, Pamoja Ghana aims to conduct a massive sensitization campaign in eight (8) peri-urban communities in the Wuoyeman and Abokobi in the Okaikoi North Sub-Metropolitan Assembly and the Ga East Municipal Assembly respectively, in the Greater Accra Region, for community women to participate in the 2010 local elections. An integral objective of the project is to also raise awareness of the key community actors on gender issues and women’s rights so that female leaders are enabled to engage the district assemblies in the integration of gender issues in local development programmes.
At the end of the project, Pamoja Ghana wants to see at least 25% more women from the eight (8) communities voted in the December 2010 local elections and women expressed themselves during political platform presentations. Also, at the end of the project, it is envisioned that community members are engaging local authorities on gender and other community development issues.
