Canada is providing significant support in Haiti through numerous Canadian departments and agencies, including Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and the Department of National Defence (DND).
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT)
The department plays a role in coordinating the whole-of-government effort in Haiti, and in engaging with our international and hemispheric partners, notably through consistent high-level engagement at political and official levels. Haiti is at the core our engagement in the Americas, as our largest program in the region. Consequently, it's a priority country for funding from FAITC's Global Peace and Security Fund, managed by the Department's Stabilization and Reconstruction Task Force (START).
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
Canada's assistance program is delivered in large part by CIDA in Haiti, the leading beneficiary of Canada’s development assistance in the Americas. CIDA’s development program is designed to meet the needs of the population, reinforce democratic governance, improve access to basic services and improve overall living conditions in Haiti.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
Through the RCMP's International Peace Operations Program, Canadian civilian police have been deployed to Haiti to act as advisors to the Haitian National Police (HNP) in the areas of management, professional standards, training and mentoring.
Correctional Service of Canada (CSC)
The Correctional Service of Canada is working in collaboration with its partners from the international community to contribute to the reform of the justice system and support the Haitian Government efforts to strengthen their correctional system.
Department of National Defence (DND)
The Canadian Forces Operation HAMLET contributes officers to support the constitutional process in Haiti and help maintain a secure and stable environment. The Canadian Forces personnel in Haiti serve in key positions (including Chief of Staff) at MINUSTAH Task Force Headquarters in Port-au-Prince.
