As of September 4, 2013, Haitian citizens between the ages of 14 and 79 must give their biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) when submitting an application for a visitor visa, study permit or work permit.This new requirement affects citizens from 29 countries and one territory.

You can give your biometrics at the visa application centre (VAC) in Port-au-Prince.

Where to apply:
Application type:Online*Through the VAC in Port-au-Prince
To the visa office in-person by appointment*
Temporary Resident Visa (Visitor)YesYesYes
Study PermitYesYesYes
Work PermitYesYesYes
Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)NoYesYes

*Whether you apply online or in person at the visa office, if you need to give your biometrics you will have to go in person to a VAC to have your biometrics taken.

Please note, you DO NOT require an appointment to submit your application through the VAC. We encourage you to apply online or through the VAC as applications submitted directly to the visa office will take longer to process. By submitting an application through the VAC, you will be able to take advantage of the extended hours of service, biometric collection, more flexible payment methods, online tracking of your application, and the assurance that your application is complete and all the proper documentation is included.  We are confident that this will lead to more efficient processing of your application.

In-person at the visa office

To obtain an appointment to submit an application directly to the visa office, you must contact us via email at and provide us with:

  • Your name
  • Your passport number
  • Your cell phone number
  • The number of applications you want to submit.

In the e-mail response, you will receive the date of your appointment and information regarding the forms to be filled out, the documents to be provided and the payment method of the processing fees. On the day of your appointment, you must provide the written confirmation of the appointment (a copy of the e-mail response) to be admitted to the visa office of the Embassy.

Length of time to obtain an appointment

Please note, you will not obtain an appointment until several weeks after the date that you submitted your request via email. Also note, processing times begin the date the application is filed at the Embassy and not once you obtain your appointment.

When filing your application to the Embassy, you will receive a numbered voucher, which will indicate the date that you must return to the Embassy to retrieve either your passport with visa, your passport and a letter of refusal or a request for additional documents.

To cancel your appointment

If you currently have an appointment to submit a temporary resident or permanent resident travel document application and would prefer to submit your application through the VAC, please contact the visa office to cancel your appointment.

To cancel your appointment please send an email to and provide us with:

  • Your name
  • Your passport number
  • Your cell phone number
  • The date of your appointment

Request to change the date of an appointment (exceptional cases only)

Once you have obtained the date of your appointment, it is not possible to change it. If you send us an email requesting an earlier date, you must clearly state the reasons why you need an earlier date. An officer in the Immigration section of the Embassy will determine if you can obtain a new appointment date.

The officer will authorize a change only if it is determined that the application is in the national interest of Canada or if compassionate grounds warrant a change (the agent may ask for proof). For example, the following reasons will not be considered valid justification for the authorization of a change of the date for an appointment :

  • Attend a wedding;
  • Attend a birth;
  • Cheaper airfare at an earlier date;
  • Attend a business meeting that the officer does not consider important enough for Canada;
  • Attend a school graduation ceremony.

If a new appointment date is approved, you will receive an email confirming the new date. Otherwise, you will receive no response and the initial date of appointment received will remain unchanged.
