Canadian Commemorative Service 2016

Hong Kong, November 28, 2016 – The Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macao will host a commemorative ceremony on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Sai Wan War Cemetery.

The Ceremony will mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Hong Kong. The ceremony will commemorate the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers, as well as other Allied and local forces during the Battle of Hong Kong and in the subsequent occupation years in defence of our values and freedom. The Consulate General of Canada is honoured to have the participation of the following special guests at the ceremony this year:

  • Ms. Peggy Lee, one of the first Chinese-Canadian women to serve in World War II with the BC St. John Ambulance
  • Mr. Tommy Wong, served in the Canadian Army Force 136 and was deployed in India and Burma during World War II
  • Mr. Monty Lee, served in Bomber Command, Royal Canadian Air Force, during World War II
  • Mr. Peter Choi, Hong Kong World War II veteran and President of the World War II Veterans Association (HK)
  • Mrs. Victoria Wallace, Director General of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
  • The Canadian Armed Forces Delegation
  • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipes and Drums

Time: 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. (Please arrive by 9:30am)
Location: CWGC Sai Wan War Cemetery, Cape Collinson Road, Chai Wan, Hong Kong

Consul General Jeff Nankivell will be available for a photo opportunity and to answer brief questions from the media about the commemoration following the ceremony. For longer interviews, please contact us in advance.

Complimentary shuttle buses will depart at 8:45 a.m. from Edinburgh Place (next to the General Post Office), Central, and return following the service.
