2016 National Day Message from the Consul General of Canada

Dear Hong Kong and Macao friends,

It is my great pleasure to extend my sincerest best wishes to each of you as we celebrate Canada’s 149th anniversary of Confederation.  It is our distinct privilege to share this auspicious day with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as we also recognize the 19th anniversary of its Establishment Day.

This year, Canadians in Hong Kong and Macao are celebrating Canada’s strong connection and close friendship with the two Special Administrative Regions with the theme “Cool Connected Canada”. Not only do we have the same anniversary, we are also connected by shared Commonwealth values and heritage, which is illustrated by our democratic aspirations, commitment to good governance and the rule of law, as well as the heroic sacrifice of the 554 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in defending Hong Kong in the Battle of Hong Kong 75 years ago.

The Canada-Hong Kong connections are strong. We estimate that there are over 300,000 Canadians and 175,000 Canadian universities alumni living in Hong Kong. Our strong connection also plays a key role in fostering our bilateral trade and investment relations. In February 2016, Canada and Hong Kong signed a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement. On the innovation front, we signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding in March 2016 to advance collaborations and to bring more energy efficient technologies to the Hong Kong owned factories based in the Pearl River Delta. Canada’s merchandise exports to Hong Kong totalled C$3.9 billion in 2015, making it Canada’s 8th largest merchandise export market.

Canada was able to further strengthen our ties to Hong Kong through several key visits. For example, many important Canadian dignitaries visited Hong Kong in 2015/16, including the Chief Justice of Canada and three Provincial Premiers, all of whom are eager to continue to solidify our unique relationship. I am also very pleased that in May 2016, Canada received a special recognition award from Community Business for inspirational leadership and support in promoting LGBTI inclusion in Hong Kong.

As we celebrate Canada’s National Day and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Establishment Day together, let us celebrate the successes of the longstanding ties that bind us, and the endless opportunities that will continue to keep us connected

We look forward to further enriching the Canada-Hong Kong bilateral relationships as we stride towards Canada’s 150th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the Establishment of Hong Kong Special Administration Region in 2017.

Happy Canada Day! Bonne fête du Canada!

J. Ian Burchett
Consul General
