Open to: External applicants residing in Hong Kong, all current Consulate General employees occupying an indeterminate or term position, emergency employees, and spouses and dependents of Canada Based Staff who meet all the essential qualifications stated below and whose applications are received by the closing date.

This selection process may be used to create an eligibility list of qualified candidates for this and other similar positions, with various tenures, including indeterminate or term at the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macao.

Summary of responsibilities

Provides commercial and administrative assistant services to three Commercial Officers/Trade Commissioners.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must clearly demonstrate on their application that they meet all essential education, language, and experience criteria and are within the area of selection.

Education:

  • Successful completion of post-secondary diploma/certificate on relevant fields OR an acceptable combination of education and relevant work experience;

Language: 

  • Excellent written and spoken English;
  • Fluency in spoken Cantonese and written Chinese;

Experience

Please highlight in your cover letter using the following titles how you meet each experience criteria:

  • Minimum of 1 year work experience in an office environment;
  • Experience working with social media platforms;
  • Experience in Event planning and organization;
  • Experience in an administrative function (e,g, meeting coordination, correspondence, transportation coordination, financial management and ability to support at least three people);
  • Experience using Microsoft Office or comparable (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point) and web-based applications in an office environment;
  • Experience working in a team environment;

Rated requirements:

Only candidates who meet the education, language and experience requirements will be contacted for assessment of the rated requirements. The assessment of the rated requirements below may include an interview, a written test, and other tests that will consist of a series of questions designed to evaluate each applicant's knowledge, abilities and personal suitability for the position.

Knowledge:

  • The Canadian economy;
  • Methods of extracting and manipulating information from statistical databases;
  • PC skills - Microsoft Outlook, Internet Browser, Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • Social networking platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Youtube;

Abilities:

  • Ability to conduct background research and analysis on commercial matters;
  • Ability to take direction and follow instructions;
  • Ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment;
  • Ability to multitask and juggle several tasks at once and be able to prioritize as required;
  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing in English and Cantonese;
  • Ability to work independently as well as work in groups;

Personal suitability:

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to support the organization of programs, missions, and trade fairs;

Asset Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications:

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
  • Fluency (written/spoken) in French and/or Mandarin;
  • Experience using electronic customer relationship management software (eCRM);
  • Knowledge of Hong Kong’s governmental and business environment;
  • Knowledge of Trade Commissioner Service, its role, mandate, service standards, tool and policies;
  • Knowledge of international business development practices, as they relate to the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong;
  • Abilities to liaise with IT professionals in managing an on-line marketing platform through web and mobile networks.

Operational requirements

  • Must be able to work overtime on short notice on occasion; and
  • Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends);
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidates must already possess a valid work authorization or otherwise be permitted to work legally in Hong Kong by the closing date and for the duration of the employment period
  • Successful candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Reliability Status (RS)

The appointment of the successful candidate will be subject to obtaining Reliability Status (RS). To conduct the RS process, the candidate must submit the following documents on being selected by the Mission:

  • Completed Reliability Status Check forms (provided by the Consulate General)
  • Consent form for Reliability Status Check – for local criminal record check and Canada’s vetting/evaluation (provided by the Consulate General)
  • Proof of address from your bank or other recognized companies stating your name and your address
  • Professional and education mark sheets or certificates
  • Letters of reference
  • Reference checks – from three referees
  • HKID card or valid work permit
  • Passport photo x 1
  • Credit check results
  • Other documents as required

Proof of right to work and copies of educational and any specified professional qualifications will be required.

Selection Process
