Renewal Passports for Children

The normal processing time for renewal passports is 20 working days, commencing the day after the assessment of a fully completed application with supporting documentation. However, the complexity of routine verifications and security checks may leads to longer processing times.

Children Canadian passports are valid for a maximum period of 5 years from the date of issuance. The passports only contain 36 pages.

You can submit an application to renew your passport if:

  • current passport has expired or will expire within 12 months of the expiry date
  • if all visa pages are full
  • if you wish to replace your current passport with the new epassport

For renewals, please submit the following:

  • child's original birth certificate with parentage details (If your child's most recent passport was issued in Canada.)
  • original proof of Canadian citizenship
  • the most recent Canadian passport (even if the passport has expired)
  • two identical passport photos, one of which must be certified and signed by the guarantor. Canadian parent can act as guarantor provided s/he is listed as “Other parent” and notApplicant” in the child’s application form. 
  • Both parents' original/photocopies (certified by guarantor that originals have been seen) valid government issued ID with signature (eg: passport, HK international driving permit, Canadian driver's licence, Canadian health card, etc.) 
  • the non-refundable processing fee 
  • all documents pertaining to custody, mobility of, or access to the child in English or French only 
    • Original final court order must be presented
    • If applicable, written mobility consent for the child from the non-custodial parent must be provided, along with signature ID to verify non-custodial parent's signature.
    • Hong Kong court documents in Chinese must be translated and certified by the Family Court Registry
  • one completed Child Passport Application (PPTC 042 (PDF*, 377.62 KB)

Applications may be submitted:

  1. Registered mail or Drop-in box
    Service hours: 07:00 - 19:00, Monday - Friday
    These services are recommended for submitting simple, standard passport renewal applications such as simplified renewal cases since there is no waiting time at our office.
    For Macao Residents: Please note, you are required to enclose a return envelope (about 1/2 A4 size paper) with the applicant's name and mailing address.
  2. By online appointment
    Service hours: 08:30 - 12:30, Monday - Friday
    This is recommended if you wish to visit our office to submit your completed application only.
  3. By walk-in
    Service hours: 08:30 - 10:30, Monday - Friday
    Effective January 19th 2015, walk-in service for application submission and general enquiries will be from 8:30 to 10:30 only. Walk-in clients will be seen on a first-come-first served basis. The last ticket will be issued at 10:15.
    Walk-in clients can expect to wait up to 2 hours to be served, as priority is given to clients with scheduled appointments.

Emergency cases, such as offloaded airline passengers and lost/stolen passports, will continue to be served beyond these hours.

If you are ready to submit a completed passport application, you are advised to use the online appointment system instead.


Since incomplete applications will not be accepted at the counter, we strongly recommend that you fully complete your application and prepare your supporting documentation prior to visiting our office. Incomplete applications submitted via mail or drop-in box will be mailed back to you within 7 working days. Should you need to travel within or close to the 20 business days, please submit your application in person to our office instead of using the mail-in or drop-in options. Thank you.

For corrections on the form, please cross out the error with a single line and make appropriate changes with your initials above or beside the error. Do not use any correct fluid.
