Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Winnipeg visits Mumbai

May 12, 2017 / No. 201705-01

Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Winnipeg arrives in Mumbai on May 13, 2017 for a five-day visit. HMCS Winnipeg is a Halifax-class frigate that has served in the Royal Canadian Navy since 1996. Winnipeg is the ninth ship of her class, whose design emerged from the Canadian Patrol Frigate Project. She is the second Canadian warship to carry the name HMCS Winnipeg.

This is the second visit of HMCS Winnipeg to India in the past 16 months. This is a clear recognition of India’s role in maintaining peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region and of Canada’s commitment to maintaining a persistent presence in this strategically important area of the world. My crew of 247 are very much looking forward to experiencing the history and culture of the great city of Mumbai.” - Commander J. Jeffrey Hutchinson, Commanding Officer, HMCS Winnipeg

Her Majesty’s Canadian (HMC) Ships Winnipeg and Ottawa are in the Indo -Pacific region for the Royal Canadian Navy’s POSEIDON CUTLASS 17 deployment. POSEIDON CUTLASS 17 includes exercises with regional partner navies at sea, as well as in key events and engagements in ports across the region.

It is during this deployment that the HMCS Winnipeg will be conducting a port of call and goodwill visit to Mumbai. This goodwill visit by HMCS Winnipeg follows the recent visit to India of the Honorable Harjit Singh Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, Canada. This visit aims at strengthening Canada-India bilateral relations in trade with a specific focus on defence and other key priority sectors.
