Getting Married in Indonesia

Information regarding the marriage process in Indonesia, including the contact information for the local civil registry office and required fees, should be obtained from the local Civil Registry office or from the Indonesian Embassy in Canada if you are in Canada.

Apart from various local requirements, the Embassy is aware that the Indonesian Civil Registry requires a certificate from foreign Embassies stating that there is no objection to the marriage of their citizens.

Please note that the Embassy does not issue a Certificate of Non-impediment to marriage to either Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Instead, the Embassy issues a Statement Letter in Lieu of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad. To date, this letter has been accepted by the Indonesian authorities with no difficulties.

To apply for this letter, you must submit the following documents in original or certified copy:

  • Passport of both parties;
  • Birth Certificate (if born in Canada) or Citizenship Card or Landing Record (if born outside Canada) of the Canadian citizen;
  • Divorce documents if either party was previously married;
  • Declaration from both parties concerning nationality, marital status, and contact information (including complete address, email address, and phone number where you can be reached). This document can be obtained at the Embassy or by email to jkrta.consular@international.gc.ca

The documents can be submitted either in person at the Embassy of Canada in Jakarta or the Australian Consulate General in Denpasar, or by mail to the following address:

C/O Consular Section
Embassy of Canada
World Trade Center I, 6th Floor
Jl. Jend. Sudirman Kav. 29 – 31
Jakarta

Any documents not in English or French must be translated into English or French by a sworn translator.

The fee is CAN$30.00 or IDR 310,000. For methods of payment, please refer to http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/indonesia-indonesie/consular_services_consulaires/fees-frais.aspx?lang=eng

Processing time is five (5) working days. The Embassy recommends that you apply for the letter two (2) months prior to the wedding date.

If you reside in Indonesia, the Embassy can mail the letter to you. Please provide a complete mailing address, including the postal code. This courier service is available for an additional fee IDR 26,000, which must be received prior to the documents being sent.
