Canadian Ambassador Inaugurates Street Children Projects

29 July 2013

JAKARTA – Canadian Ambassador H.E. Donald Bobiash today visited two projects aimed at assisting street children in the Greater Jakarta region. The first project was the construction of a ‘Canada Wing’ at a shelter run by Padepokan Zammi Karina (PAZKI) Foundation in Depok. The second project was renovation and addition to the facilities of Kampus Diakonia Modern (KDM) Foundation, a street children’s centre in Bekasi with an emphasis on recycling.

“I am glad that we are able to support these small but effective initiatives that directly contribute to the betterment of street children’s lives in the Greater Jakarta region,” stated Ambassador Bobiash. “I believe these projects will assist them with their education so that in turn they can help themselves achieve a better future.”

The ‘Canada Wing’ is an annex to the main building of the street children’s shelter run by PAZKI. The shelter currently hosts around 30 children from different age groups. During daytime the main building is used as a classroom and converted into their bedroom at night. The annex provides these children with a new classroom in which the older students can focus on their studies in preparation for the national equivalence exams. The new building also includes a modest library to encourage the children to spend more time reading and less time busking on the streets.

The Canadian Embassy is a longstanding partner of KDM with whom we co-operate on the Green Project which involves a joint recycling program. The Embassy’s support enabled KDM to renovate and make some additions to their classroom, library and multimedia room in their facility. The support also allowed KDM to modify their operational vehicles and provide new uniforms for their recycling collectors.

Both projects were funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) program. Directly managed by the Canadian Embassy, the program provides funding to small but visible, high impact, results-oriented local projects.
