Ambassador’s Message

Peter MacArthur, Ambassador of CanadaH.E. Peter MacArthur, Ambassador of Canada

Welcome to the Embassy of Canada in Indonesia website which I invite you to explore. We represent a team of Canadian and Indonesian professionals committed to defending and promoting Canadian interests and values in Indonesia, to the mutual benefit. This includes consular and business development services to Canadians, and a wide range of bilateral partnerships. This is a full service Embassy comprising the foreign affairs and international trade functions, alongside immigration (visas and study permits), official development assistance (ODA), national defence, and police (RCMP) programs. Export Development Canada (EDC) is also represented in support of export finance and insurance interests.

Indonesia is a remarkable country which more Canadians need to know about and understand. It has a major geographic and cultural presence together with significant history and natural resources, including its people. As a fast growing G20 and APEC member economy at the heart of ASEAN, with which Canada has a longstanding dialogue relationship, we have many shared interests. Indonesia is one of Canada’s most important partners in the Asia Pacific region.

The two countries value multiculturalism, pluralism, tolerance and democracy, and a commitment to sustainable economic growth through facilitation of small businesses, innovation and education. Canada and Indonesia are also both vast countries featuring the world’s two longest coastlines and significant forests so crucial to the planet’s atmosphere and oceans in the context of climate change.

The Embassy works with our Indonesian partners to further develop and optimize the exciting opportunities our bilateral complementarity offers in the areas of trade, investment, and infrastructure. Agri-food, forestry, cleantech, aerospace, and information and communications technology are among the priority sectors at play. The two-way trade between both countries increases at an annual rate of 20% and exceeded Cdn$3.5 billion in 2015. Indonesia is also one of Canada’s primary investment destinations in Asia, with Canadian job-creating investment in natural resources, high technology and services valued at Cdn$4.3 billion. Indonesia is also invested in growing business interests employing Canadians in Canada.

One of our goals is to support transparency and due process in the rule of law so crucial to the business community, investors, tourists and other stakeholders in our important bilateral relationship. From the standpoint of unity in our respective diversities, our two peoples will be the beneficiaries of reinforced people-to-people linkages, particularly among our young people. There are thousands of Indonesians and Canadians travelling and studying in each other’s country. Canada is also actively engaged in development assistance in Indonesia, totalling more than Cdn$30 million per year, to support sustainable economic growth, democracy, good governance, and human rights. The two countries are also partners in addressing significant global challenges such as climate change and terrorism.

So I hope that you will find this website helpful, whether you are a Canadian planning to visit or already living here or you are an Indonesian interested in Canada and thinking about studying or holidaying or partnering with the Embassy.
