In 1996, bilateral relations between Canada and the Islamic Republic of Iran were such that the two countries agreed to exchange Ambassadors. However, since late 2007 both countries have reduced their representation in each other's capital to the Chargé level. Given ongoing concerns, Canadian political and economic relations with Iran have been governed by the Controlled Engagement Policy.
