Average Processing Times
Processing times begin on the day our office receives a complete application and end on the day the final decision (i.e. approval/refusal) leaves our office. These are given as an indication; they are not a guarantee of how long it will take to process your application and they do not include the time needed for the passport and visa to be returned to you.
Applicants are strongly advised to apply for a visa or permit six to eight weeks prior to traveling, beginning to work or beginning your studies.
Temporary Residence Applications:
- Temporary resident visa (visitor visa):
By mail: 3 weeks*
In person: 1-5 working days* - Study permit : 4-6 weeks*
- Temporary work permit (other than live-in caregiver): 4-6 weeks*
- Live-in Caregiver: 6-8 months*
- Travel document for permanent resident returning to Canada:
By mail: 2 weeks*
In person: Same day processing*
* Some applications take longer to process for various reasons. For example, the following factors could delay the processing of your application:
- incomplete applications; medical exam required (additional 2-4 weeks from the date of the medical exam if no complications arise, such as the need for further testing);
- background or security checks required;
- criminal record;
- interview required;
- verification of documents needed; or
- other factors that complicate your case .
Note: This Visa office will not respond to case status enquiries within the processing times above. Processing times begin on the day our office receives a complete application.
