Application for a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship (Proof of Citizenship) from Italy

Note: that the name on you Certificate of Citizenship will be the same as the one shown on your previous Certificate document(s) or on your birth certificate.

The following requirements apply to children as well.

If… 

Then send the following supporting documents:

you were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent on or after

January 1, 1947

  • Original birth certificate which lists your parents issued by the authorities in the country where you were born—estratto di nascita plurilingue con maternità e paternità
  • Original or certified copies of the Canadian birth certificate or Certificate of Canadian Citizenship of the Canadian parent
  • Certified copies of two different valid pieces of personal identification; one must have a photo
  • Two photos (see photograph specifications)
  • Fees

you are applying to replace or update your certificate or you have a certificate of registration of birth abroad (RBA)

  • All available original citizenship/naturalization certificate(s) and any pink transmission copies
  • Plain photocopies of two different valid pieces of personal identification; one must have a photo
  • Two photos (see photograph specifications)
  • Fees
  • A signed letter in which you describe how and when your citizenship document was misplaced, lost, stolen, destroyed or became inaccessible, and commit to returning it to the Canadian authorities, should it be found.

How to obtain…

An Italian birth certificate

  • The estratto di nascita plurilingue con maternità e paternità that can be obtained at your local City Hall does not need to be translated.

Certified copies

  • An officer at the Comune, a notary, a cancelliere del Tribunale, as well as an officer of the Embassy of Canada can certify a copy (copia conforme all’originale).

Acceptable pieces of identification

If Canadian identification documents are not available, we accept an Italian:

  • passport
  • driver’s licence
  • health card (tessera sanitaria)
  • identity card
    NOTE: All children who legally reside in Italy can obtain a Carta d’identità regardless of age and nationality. Contact your Comune for instructions.
     
  • birth certificate with photo

These documents do not need to be translated.

Translation of documents

In Italian the sworn translation is referred to as “traduzione giurata”. The following public officials are authorized to administer oaths for the affidavit:

  • clerk of the court (cancelliere del Tribunale)
  • notary
  • justice of the peace
  • officer of an Embassy or Consulate of Canada

Were you unable to obtain a birth certificate in the international format, you must obtain a translation of the original birth certificate, which must be accompanied by a sworn declaration, by the translator, attesting to its truthfulness.

This declaration may be sworn before any of the persons mentioned above.
