Passports

Most information is already available on the Passport Canada website and will not be reproduced again. When selecting the link above, the resulting page may default to the forms for Canadians in Canada; make sure to select the tab marked “Canadian abroad”.

The Embassy of Canada in Rome has prepared a list of topics and frequently asked questions to assist you with your application. You should write to us only if the answer is not contained in the links below.

Forms and documents

Forms can be found on Passport Canada’s website. You are encouraged to complete the forms on your computer prior to printing them.

Documents to be included in the application:

  • all child applications MUST now be accompanied by a multilingual birth certificate with the names of the parents (if born in Italy, Estratto di nascita plurilingue con paternità e maternità).

Photos

The Embassy of Canada does not recommend any particular photographer.

IMPORTANT! The photos required for Canadian Passports are different from those required for Italian Passports or fototessera.

Please read the instructions that precede the application very carefully and visit this webpage; we have prepared an Italian version of the photo specifications | PDF * (87 KB) for Italian-speaking photographers.

There are special photo requirements for newborns and babies.

Fees

Passport fees are for processing the application and are thus non-refundable, irrespective of whether the passport is issued or not.

Visit our webpage dedicated to fees and payment methods for instructions specific to the region whence the payment originates.

Submitting your application

Most passport applications are submitted by mail (“raccomandata” is preferable.) or by courier to our address.

You or someone on your behalf can also apply in person. See our hours of operation.

Processing times

Passport Canada’s commitment — there is no urgent processing outside of Canada.

Note that this does not include mail time to and from the Embassy.

If you need your passport more urgently, please send us a detailed explanation of your situation and the best phone number to reach you.

Receiving your new passport

Your new passport will be sent to you by registered mail (“raccomandata”) as soon as we receive it from Canada. If you choose to pick it up from our office or to arrange a courier, you must let us know.

Sign your passport as soon as received.

Parents shouldn’t sign their child’s passport; if you did so by mistake, here’s what to do.
