Step-by-Step Application Guide

Once you have read the “Eligibility Criteria” section on this website, you next step is to apply. You can then go ahead and complete the required forms, attach the required supporting documents, arrange payment of the program participation fee, confirm the application package is complete and the information correct, and send in your application package.

Important change for IEC 2013

The application process to participate in the International Experience Canada (IEC) initiative involves two stages:

  1. IEC Assessment: to determine whether you meet the IEC eligibility criteria, following the guidelines directly below, and;
  2. Immigration Assessment: to determine your admissibility to Canada for a work permit, using “MyCIC”.

Step 1 – Required documents: IEC Assessment to determine whether you meet the IEC eligibility criteria,

  1. IEC Application and Declarations form, PDF, 117 KB, * .
  2. A legible photocopy of the identification pages of your passport (family names, given name(s), date and place of birth, passport's issue and expiry dates, photo). Your passport must be valid for at least one day beyond the date of your departure from Canada and there must be one completely blank page, other than the last page, available in your passport.
  3. Proof that you have paid the IEC participation fee. Please assemble them in the above sequence (the check list must be placed on top), staple at top left-hand and mail the package in an A4-size (24cm x 33cm) envelope.
  4. A self-addressed envelope (12x23.5cm). 

Note: Please arrange your documents in the order indicated above.

We keep all the documents you send us, so please keep copies for your files.

The Embassy of Canada reserves the right to request additional supporting documents and/or proceed with additional verifications (for example, request original documents, contact your employer).

Incomplete, unsigned and non-compliant application packages will not be processed.

WARNING: Misrepresentation
All applicants are legally required to be truthful and disclose all relevant information with their applications. Applicants who submit application packages that contain misrepresented information, knowingly or unknowingly, will be denied entry to Canada and may also be banned from travelling to Canada. The details of the misrepresentation will remain permanently on record with Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency. Timing of the Application

It will take approximately four to eight weeks to receive your result and may take longer depending on the situation. To ensure the timely completion of the processing, we encourage applicants to submit the application as soon as possible.

Before Submitting your Application: Important Notice

  1. carefully and thoroughly check to ensure that there are no incomplete or incorrectly answered areas on your application.
  2. make sure you submit all necessary documents using the check list in the application kit. All incomplete applications and/or applications with insufficient documents/information will be returned.
  3. false information in your application not only results in the refusal of your application, but may also seriously affect any future application.
  4. make sure to write your address in Japan at Q2 on the application form.
  5. senders of all applications received after the quota for the 2011 Working Holiday Program has been reached will be contacted by the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy for a refund of the participation fees.

Submitting Your Application Package

You can send your application package by mail.

Please note: The Embassy of Canada does not take any responsibility for lost or misdirected mail. We strongly recommend that applicants use more secure means, such as a courier, to send in their application packages. 

After your complete application has been received and IEC has determined that you meet the IEC eligibility criteria, you will be sent a Conditional Acceptance Letter via email which includes your World Tracking Number.

Step 2: Immigration Assessment: to determine your admissibility to Canada for a work permit, using “MyCIC”.

Immigration assessment using “My CIC”

Once you have received the IEC conditional acceptance letter from IEC Japan, the  Embassy of Canada , you will be directed to create a <MyCIC> account to begin the Immigration assessment of your application process.

To communicate with the visa and immigration service, email their services directly. Always include your World Tracking Number in any correspondence.

The Embassy of Canada is not able to respond to your questions about your Immigration assessment using MyCIC.
