Canadian Commemorative Olympic Games Coins
January 14 – April 14, 2009
Embassy of Canada Prince Takamado Gallery

January 8, 2009

Exhibition Announcement

Just one year before the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Embassy of Canada presents an exhibition featuring Canadian commemorative Olympic Games coins.

In 2010, Canada will have the honour of hosting the Olympic Games for the third time from February 12 to 28 and the Paralympic Games for the second time from March 12 to 21. Canada first hosted the Summer Games in Montreal in 1976 and the Winter Games in Calgary in 1988. The 2010 Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler.

To celebrate the start of the one year countdown before Vancouver 2010, this exhibition features Canadian and Japanese coins commemorating the Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Nagano, Sapporo, and Tokyo Olympics. It will be the first appearance in Japan of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games coins.

The exhibition also introduces the Royal Canadian Mint, a for-profit Crown Corporation with a mandate to produce circulation and non-circulation coins (for Canada and other countries). The Mint was founded in 1908 and celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Coins issued to commemorate the Mint’s centennial will also be displayed.

This exhibition is being held in cooperation with the Royal Canadian Mint.
