Canada-Japan Leadership Fund

2013–2014 Program Guidelines


Type and Value of Scholarships/Bursary

  1. Post Secondary Education Scholarships
    A. Science/Engineering: 1 million yen each
    B. Arts and Humanities/Business/Trade: 1 million yen each
  2. Language Study Bursary: 100,000 yen each


Eligibility Requirements*

  1. Post Secondary Education Scholarships: The applicant must be a Japanese student who has graduated from a high school or is currently enrolled in a higher education institution and already accepted by an accredited university or college in Canada for admission to an academic or graduate study program. Holders of Canadian immigrant visas and participants in inter-university exchange programs are not eligible.
  2. Language Study Bursary: The applicant must be a Japanese young person (age 30 or under) who will study English or French at a school affiliated with Languages Canada. Elementary, junior-high, and high school students planning to participate in summer and other short-term study programs are eligible to apply, as are Working Holiday Program participants who will enrol in study programs for up to 6 months.

* Recognizing that some youth affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake may continue to experience hardship resulting from the disasters, special consideration will be given to those applying from the region.


Application Procedure and Timeline

Documents to submit

  1. Applicants for Post Secondary Education Scholarships

    • Application form (for study at institutions of higher education)*
    • A statement of your reason for applying highlighting your leadership potential
      (English or French – 500 words or less)
    • Your most recent report card or transcript of grades
    • 2 letters of recommendation
      (each letter should be written in the format provided, sealed in an envelope by the person writing the recommendation, and sent with the application package)
    • Copy of your acceptance letter/document from a Canadian institution of higher education
    • Copy of the page bearing your photo in your passport
  2. Applicants for Language Study Bursary

    • Application form (for language study)*
    • A statement of your reason for applying highlighting your leadership potential
      (Japanese – 1000 characters or less)
    • Copy of your acceptance letter (document) from a school affiliated with Languages Canada
    • Copy of the page bearing your photo in your passport

Application Deadline:
The application period for the 2013–2014 scholarships is from April 1, 2013 to June 14, 2013. The application package must be received at the Embassy by June 14, 2013.

Announcement of Results: Only successful applicants will be informed by the middle of July 2013.


Questions and Further Information


Conditions

  • A recipient of Post Secondary Education Scholarship will provide the Embassy of Canada with a mid-term report no later than six-months following the beginning of the academic program as well as a final report upon completion of the program (both reports should be roughly 500-1000 words long in English or French).
  • A recipient of Language Study Bursary will provide the Embassy of Canada with a testimonial report upon completion of the course (500 to 1000 letters in Japanese).
  • Recipients’ names and reports may be published for Study in Canada promotional purpose by the Embassy of Canada.
  • A recipient may not concurrently hold another award from Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) or from another Canadian federal granting agency but may accept awards from other sources (e.g. foreign sources, provincial awards, private organizations, host institution).
