The Embassy of Canada in Seoul launches Canada Ciné Club

L'enfant prodige, a French language Canadian film

The Embassy of Canada in Seoul has launched the Canada Ciné Club in order to introduce Canada and Canadian culture to Korean audiences. Canadian films, despite their artistic sensitivity and variety of genre, have been underrated by the Korean public until now.

Canada Ciné Club, a quarterly film screening event, will let moviegoers experience critically-acclaimed Canadian films, while at the same time giving them an opportunity to learn about Canada’s unique blend of diverse cultures. Canada Ciné Club will also increase the market potential of Canadian film products in Korea by providing a promotional opportunity for local film distributors to showcase their films at the Canadian Embassy.

 As an inaugural film screening, the Embassy presented Barney’s Version, a Canadian comedy-drama adapted from the novel by Mordecai Richler, one of Canada’s best-loved authors. More than 80 guests who won tickets through an online event on the Embassy's Twitter account attended the screening, enjoying the film and the discussion of the film led by a well-known TV personality and film critic, Mr. Hong Eun-chul.

In addition, Canada Ciné Club was incorporated with the celebration of the week of La Francophonie this year.  In cooperation with the Embassy of France and the Quebec Government Office in Korea, the Embassy hosted the reception combined with the Canada Ciné Club’s film screening to help kick off the week of celebrations.

The screening presented L'enfant prodige, a French language Canadian film about the real life of a legendary Quebec-born piano player and composer, followed by a brief reception. A total of 70 members from the Association coréenne d`etudes québécoises, representations of Francophone member countries and the general public attended the event. Quebec-based cosmetic company Jouviance also supported the event.

The film was later re-screened at Sunkyunkwan University, as part of Festival de cinema of La Francophonie.

Both events were featured online, through the Embassy’s Inside Canada Newsletter, blog and Twitter, in addition to the Canadian Tourism Commission’s Facebook page.
