For a second consecutive year, the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles partnered with the Los Angeles Kings for the Canadian Pride/Connect2Canada night at the Staples Center on January 10, 2011 with the Kings playing the Toronto Maple Leafs (Leafs 3, Kings 2). As part of their Military Monday's, the Kings honored US Army Staff Sgt Salvatore Giunta, a US Medal of Honor recipient. Giunta received the medal for his actions in response to an ambush in Afghanistan's dangerous Korengal Valley.
Canadian Forces members joined the ceremony to honor Staff Sgt Giunta, with Sgt Cindy Scott performing the Canadian and US anthems under both countries' flags prior to the game. An audience of 19,000 spectators and television viewers across Canada and the US were witness to the bond of appreciation for the sacrifices our countries' soldiers are making in Iraq and Afghanistan.
A Canada Booth in a well-travelled area of the arena provided information about Canada to spectators. Over 260 people joined Connect2Canada, the virtual network for Canadians and friends of Canada in the United States. The Consulate General has partnered with the Kings to promote Canada’s winter sport for a number of years and the event was featured on the Kings website.
