HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Algonquin

L-R: HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Algonquin in San Diego

November 21, 2009: Ambassador Doer, Canadian Navy come to San Diego, CA

Just one month into his term, newly appointed Ambassador Gary Doer made his first official visit to the West Coast on November 21, stopping in San Diego to underscore Canada's important relationship with the U.S. military and academic communities.

Doer was met by the HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Algonquin, which not only added a strong visual reinforcement to his message about Canada-U.S. defence cooperation, but also played host to an event for more than 500 influential community leaders from San Diego.  In his keynote during the reception, Doer highlighted the Canada-U.S. trading relationship and defence partnership, and Canada's commitment to border security, environmental priorities, and science and technology collaboration.

Earlier in the day, Ambassador Doer delivered the keynote address to the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States biennial conference.

The Ambassador's travel to California early in his tenure underscored the important political, economic and social influence the state has throughout the U.S. and with Canada.  The coordinated visit with Canadian Fleet Pacific served to further underline Canada's strong commitment to defence cooperation and to the region's political and business leaders.
