Driver's Licenses

Driving in Malaysia requires either an International Driving Permit or a Malaysian Driver's Licence. A Canadian licence is not sufficient. Tourists should acquire an International Driving Permit in Canada before they arrive in Malaysia, as a Malaysian driver's licence can only be obtained by residents of Malaysia.

International Driving Permits issued in Canada

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is the exclusive legal issuer of international permits in Canada. Application forms for an international permit can be downloaded online at: International Driving Permit

Malaysian Driver’s Licence

In order to convert the Canadian driving licence to a Malaysian, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) requires a letter from the High Commission to confirm the authenticity of the document. To obtain this letter, you should bring your driver’s licence and a photo ID, e.g., a passport.

International Driving Permits issued in Malaysia

Applicants must possess a Malaysian driver's licence for at least one year to be eligible to apply for an International Driving Permit. International Driving Permits are valid for one year, but are not valid for driving within the country that issued the Permit. Applications are to be completed at the Road Transport Department (JPJ) or Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) for its members only.
